OwnZone

The OwnZone project, which started in June 2006, has given young people aged 10 - 14 the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of non threatening experiences centered around three key zones, being 'Chill', 'Learning' and 'Skill', activities such as Aromatherapy, Reflexology, First Aid, Cookery, Digital Animation, Music, Gymnastics, Personal Fitness, Yoga, Dance, Outdoor Pursuits and Fly Fishing to name but a few. To date OwnZone has supported 594 young people in total from Coedcae and Bryngwyn Secondary schools and their feeder primary schools.

Transitional issues and wider community links have been one of the key focus areas for the second year of the project, which have been addressed through links to external youth activities and organisations and signposting outward via other agencies. Four young people have achieved Youth Activity Awards (CYCA/Antioch), also two young people are representing Wales at the Welsh Youth Four Nations Fly Fishing Competition. Also the hugely successful music project, in partnership with Antioch 'Mission Music' will see a further 12 young people achieve Youth Activity Awards in the future.

The next phase will see the introduction of credit systems for skills development, together with sourcing accredited training opportunities through the OwnZone programme for young people who may otherwise not achieve this during mainstream education. Such programmes include The Children's University, where young people are accredited and recognised for their multiple intelligence, including participation, physical and emotional skills.
